Independent Cinema of the '60s on Video

Unfortunately, many of the best American independent narrative films of the '60s are currently not available on video or laserdisc. Here is a list of the movies and filmmakers mentioned in Gary Morris's article, "American Independent Narrative Cinema of the '60s: A Brief Survey."

We've indicated the video companies for each movie. Some of the movies that we've marked as unavailable may be available from smaller videos companies that aren't usually listed in video catalogs. If we've marked any of the movies as unavailable and you know otherwise, please let us know and we'll update the list.


Lionel Rogosin's Come Back Africa is currently not available; however, at one time it was available from Mystic Fire Video and you may still find it for rental in video stores and libraries.

Michael Roemer's Nothing But a Man is currently available on video from A&E Home Video and on laserdisc from Lumivision.

Jim McBride's David Holzman's Diary is currently available on video from Orion Home Video and on laserdisc from Voyager/Criterion.

Herschel Gordon Lewis' Blood Feast and 2,000 Maniacs are not currently available; however, until recently both movies were available on video. You should have no problem finding Blood Feast for rental in video stores, and if you look a little harder, you'll probably turn up 2,000 Maniacs also.

Roger Corman's The Wild Angels is available from Orion Home Video in a sell-through EP version.

Bob Rafelson's Head is currently not available; however, until recently it was available from Rhino Home Video, and you should have no problem finding it for rental in video stores.

Adolfas Mekas's Hallelujah the Hills is not available on video.

Brian De Palma's The Wedding Party is currently available on video (company not known) and Greetings is available on video from Vidmark.

John Korty's Crazy Quilt is not available on video.

Shirley Clarke's The Cool World is not available on video.

Martin Scorsese's Who's That Knocking at My Door? is available on video from Warner Home Video.

John Cassavetes' Shadows is currently available from Orion Home Video.

Morris Engel's Weddings and Babies is not available on video.

Dennis Hopper's Easy Rider is currently available on video and laserdisc from Columbia/Tristar.

Allen Barron's Blast of Silence is not available on video.

William Greaves' Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One is not available on video.

George Romero's Night of the Living Dead is available from a plethora of video companies in low-quality, murky prints. On laserdisc, however, Elite Entertainment offers a print culled directly from the original negative.

Leonard Castle's The Honeymoon Killers is available on video from Live Home Video.

Herk Harvey's Carnival of Souls is available on video from Rhino, Wea, and Warner Home Video.

Tom Lauglin's Born Losers is not currently available on video.

Monte Hellman's The Shooting is currently available on video (company not known).

Daniel Haller's Devil's Angels is not available on video.

Gerard Damiano's (more like Linda Lovelace's) Deep Throat is not currently available on video.

Richard Rush's Psych-Out is available on laserdisc from HBO Video/Image Entertainment in a two-fer package with Wild in the Streets. This disc may now be out of print (it's a cut-out bin favorite), although it's still listed in catalogs.

Frank Perry's David and Lisa is not currently available.
