This effect undercuts any and all arguments that film startles are merely sensational, mindless, sophomoric. The lighting, framing, and music accompanying Ripley's run of the hallway gauntlet are carefully designed and perfectly suited to extract the last ounce of dread and shock from a plot that has already heavily drained its spectator.
