New Films from Russia
Despite the flood of sensationalist news from Russia, be it the war in Chechnya or less-than-perfect elections, the country is becoming more normal, slowly but surely. Its film industry, too, is wrestling with the same problems as any other non-American one, struggling to survive under the juggernaut of Titanics. After the mid-decade crisis, more films are coming out, both trashy and quality. Yet, as the pressure from Disney et al is rising, so is the gap between the commerce and art. In part, it was reflected in the FilmFest, a show of modern films from post-Soviet republics that took place at New York's Museum of Modern Art last December.
