The Bloody Pit of Horror
by Gary Johnson
The Bloody Pit of Horror (aka The Crimson Executioner, Italian title: Il Boia Scarlatto) isn't one of the better Italian horror films, but it's certainly one of the strangest. And for that reason it has acquired a cult following. The movie combines elements of extreme sadism (inspired by the Marquis de Sade, whose quote "My vengeance needs blood" precedes the film) with flashes of female nudity and an obsessive contemplation of the male body beautiful (thanks to the well-oiled torso of Mickey Hargitay, who was married to Jayne Mansfield when the movie was filmed). The results are crude. The cinematography is flat and plain, with bright lighting reminiscent of direct-to-video pornographic productions. The acting is frequently amateurish. And the setting is practically devoid of atmosphere.
