During the '50s, the American film industry became interested in the dangerous aspects of the teenage criminal, producing such serious dramatic films as The Wild One (1953) and Rebel Without a Cause (1955). Yet, another genre, which was equipped to deal with the horror of the new teen culture, also took advantage of the hot topic of the teenager. Fifties horror films such as The Giant Gila Monster (1959), The Blob (1958), I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957), and Monster on the Campus (1958) used horror metaphors to explore a wide variety of issues related to the emergence of teen culture in Fifties America.
