Divided We Fall
by David Gurevich
What happened to Czech films? They were all the rage back in ‘68: Firemen’s Ball, Closely Watched Trains, Loves of a Blonde… the delicious mix of Mitteleuropa irony and the closely observed absurdity of human condition. The Soviet tanks was what happened, of course: some filmmakers left, like Milos Forman, while others, like Jiri Menzel, went into internal exile. We were reminded that there was still a Czech cinema a few years ago when Kolya won the Oscar for best Foreign Film. But a big chunk of the attraction of that candy bar of a film stemmed from the adorable child as its star… not fair. Now, finally, in Divided We Fall, directed by Jan Hrebejk, we have solid evidence that the Czech cinema is alive and well.
